There’s a chill in the air that is letting us know that the winter season is fast approaching. While many prefer to stay inside and enjoy the comforting warmth of their homes, others like to head out and explore the wintery landscapes around them.
You may be planning a winter hike already and you may even be thinking of bringing your dog along. Before heading out with your pet, make sure they have the right winter gear to deal with the elements. Allow us to highlight some of the items you may need to get before setting out with your dog.
Consider a Coat As Winter Gear Must Haves
Many of us have a tough time dealing with the cold winter air. The same could hold true for your pet. The cold air could make them very uncomfortable outdoors so go and pick up a winter coat for them. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dogs are at risk for frostbite “once the temperature falls below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Frostbite is not usually a life-threatening condition for dogs alone, but it is often followed by hypothermia, which can be fatal.”
When choosing a winter coat for your dog, the most important thing to consider is the fit. How well does the coat fit your dog’s body? Does it leave gaps where the cold air could slip in easily?
As much as possible, get a coat that is specifically designed for your dog’s breed so it will fit better. Even a puppy staying indoors will appreciate wearing a properly-fitted winter coat when going outside to potty.
We should mention that not all dogs will need winter coats. The AKC also advises that dogs with thick and dense coats can handle the cold weather just fine without added protection.
Pick Up Some Goggles for Your Pet
The snowy conditions outside can be surprisingly harsh on a dog’s eyes. Dogs with light-colored eyes are especially susceptible to ocular issues caused by the winter weather.
You can protect your pet’s eyes with dog goggles. The goggles should prevent debris from getting in your pet’s eyes as well as keep them from drying out.
Similar to the winter coat, you need to get properly-fitted goggles to maximize your pet’s protection.
