Wet Nose: Why Does My Pet Have One?

Do you play around with your pet often? Do they have a habit of waking you up in the morning too? If you answered yes to both those questions, then you’re likely aware that some pets tend to have wet noses.

It’s common for a pet cat or dog to have a wet nose. That wet nose probably doesn’t even bother you anymore.

So, why do cats and dogs have wet noses? For that matter, should you be worried if your pet has a dry nose?

The answers to those questions are in this article. Read on to find out more about that curious aspect of your pet’s body.

Why Your Cat or Dog Has a Wet Nose

A pet cat or dog sporting a wet nose is perfectly normal. It doesn’t mean your pet has a cold or anything like that.

The explanation for your pet’s wet nose is either functional or intentional.

According to The Spruce Pets, cats lick their noses instinctively. They do it out of habit.

Dogs also lick their noses instinctively, but it can also be a byproduct of how their body works. Glands located near a dog’s nose produce liquid regularly. That liquid could be the reason why your dog often has a wet nose.

Cats and dogs also don’t mind having wet noses because it helps them pick up on scents better. In the wild, that wet nose can help a cat or dog track down food.

Should You Be Worried about Your Pet’s Dry Nose?

Now that we know that your pet having a wet nose is perfectly normal, should you be worried if that’s missing? Is a dry nose a sign of a potential problem?

Unfortunately, there is no one clear answer to those questions.

A dry nose could be a sign of a potential issue. Then again, it could just be a random occurrence that means nothing.

We’ll dive deeper into why cats and dogs may sometimes have dry noses in a separate article so please stay tuned for that!
