Many of the fun activities you can enjoy with your pet dog are no longer options during the winter. Swimming is out of the question and going on hikes is also risky with all the snowy terrain. Still, there are some outdoor activities you can experience along with your pet that could make the winter season way more fun!
We’ve included some of the best options below to help out pet owners who’ve run out of ideas. Try them out along with your dog and see if you like them.
Show Your Dog the Snowy Terrain
Your dog will likely be very excited to see some of his/her favorite places now covered in snow. Give him/her a firsthand look by visiting those places. See if your dog will recognize the place and how he/she will react.
If this is the first time your dog will be exposed to snow, you may want to give him/her some booties. Make sure the booties fit snugly but not too tightly to maintain your dog’s comfort. For more information about booties, read our Keeping Dogs Warm on Winter Walks article.
Play Fetch Outside with a Brightly Colored Ball
You can continue playing games with your dog throughout the winter. One game that’s definitely worth trying is wintertime fetch.
Wintertime fetch is basically the same as the game you play during the other months of the year except you have to use a brightly-colored ball. The bright colors will make the ball easier to spot in the snow.
Try Out Skijoring
There’s a fun winter sport you can try together with your pet known as Skijoring. According to Forbes, Skijoring is a sport with roots in the Nordics and Siberia that involves you getting on skis and your dog pulling you ahead with the help of a rope.
Different places around the country have Skijoring competitions and you can even train your dog for it. If you’re looking for a good way to stay active during the winter, Skijoring may be the answer you’re looking for.
Winter is often associated with inactivity, but it doesn’t have to be pure downtime for you and your dog. Hopefully, the activity suggestions above will click with you and your pet and you’ll be able to do something fun this winter season!
