I always find it hard to resist giving my pet cat some of the foods I’m having, but in some cases, you need to resist that temptation. Cats can’t eat everything we do because certain items are harmful to them in one way or another.
We’ve already discussed the drinks that are potentially poisonous to your feline friend in an last week’s article. For this article, we will discuss the solid foods that are bad for them.
Avocado
Given that avocado offers so many nutrients that benefit us, you may have assumed that feeding some of it to your cat is no big deal. Sadly, that is not the case.
The Persin present in avocado can be the reason why your cat suffers through bouts of diarrhea and/or vomiting so keep the guacamole away.
Candy
The ingredient known as Xylitol is sometimes used as an artificial sweetener. You can find it mixed into toothpaste, gum, and certain types of candy.
Xylitol is bad news for your cat as it can lead to eventual liver failure.
Garlic and Onions Are Unsafe Human Foods
While preparing dinner, you may leave behind some cloves of garlic or slices of onion on the counter. Your cat may see them and, without knowing any better, start munching on them.
Never take your eyes off of the garlic and onions when there’s a cat nearby because those popular ingredients can cause “oxidative damage to the red blood cells (making the red blood cells more likely to rupture) and gastroenteritis (e.g., nausea, oral irritation, drooling, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea) per Pet Poison Helpline.
Raw Dough
If you like making bread and/or pizza at home, you need to be careful about how you handle the raw dough especially if it contains yeast. Once a cat gets a bite of raw dough with yeast in it, they are at risk for stomach issues stemming from the dough expanding inside his/her stomach. As you can imagine, that will not be a pleasant experience for your cat.
Raw Fish
Seeing fish mentioned in this article is probably a bit surprising. We just want to clarify that it’s raw fish that can be potentially bad for cats. Parasites present in raw fish may be the reasons why your cat suddenly suffers from gastrointestinal distress, according to Zumalka.
