COVID-19 Weight Gain: Watch Food Intake

Staying in shape is always important for pet dogs. We as pet parents can help them maintain a healthy weight by keeping them active. However, with the threat of COVID-19 still looming in our lives, going outside with our pets is simply not something we can do as often as we like. That lack of activity and stimulation can be harmful to your pet’s health.

Aside from not getting enough exercise, your pet may also put on the pounds if he/she relies too much on food to stave off the boredom that comes from always being indoors.

Since we still don’t know exactly when this pandemic will end, it’s time to make adjustments that will allow us to keep our pets in better shape. Included below are some tips that should help you better control your pet’s weight through better food management.

Determine Your Pet’s Weight

The first thing you need to do before starting your pet dog’s weight loss journey is to determine what your starting point actually is. Go to your local veterinarian and ask him/her to perform a check-up on your dog.

Your veterinarian should also be able to tell if your pet is indeed overweight and what your dog’s ideal weight should be.

If the veterinarian’s office is still closed in your area because of COVID-19, you can try to consult with one online and ask about your pet’s weight.

Give Them the Right Amount of Dry Food

Many pet owners give their dogs kibble and that’s fine. However, you may not be giving the right amount to your dog and that could be the reason why he/she is putting on weight.

Purina has provided a handy chart detailing how much kibble should be given to dogs after factoring their weight into the equation. As you can see, dogs that weigh less than 12 pounds should only get around 1/3 to 1 cup of food. Meanwhile, dogs that exceed 100 pounds can be given over 4 1/2 cups of kibble.

The folks over at Purina also recommend only feeding your dog twice a day – once a day and once at night – so try following that routine as well.

Provide Healthier Treats During COVID-19

Dogs love treats, but unfortunately, many of the options sold today are not very healthy. In lieu of those snacks, the ASPCA suggests giving fruits and vegetables to your pets.

Specific recommendations from the ASPCA include apples, raspberries, carrots, and green beans. Try giving those to your dog and see which one he/she likes.

Managing your dog’s weight can be a bit tricky, but it can be done. Keeping a close on his/her food intake will definitely help. Give the suggestions above a try as they should be very beneficial to your beloved companion.
