When trying to choose which leash to use for your pet, retractable leashes will be an option to you.
As discussed in last week’s article, retractable leashes are not exactly the best option from the perspective of health and safety. Does that mean that you should just avoid them for good?
That’s the question we’ll answer in this article.
Are There Times When You Can Use the Retractable Leash?
The short answer is that yes, there are certain situations wherein you can use a retractable leash, but there are also caveats to that.
Assuming Fido has received ample amounts of dog training, Preventive Vet shares one suggestion regarding when to use one. Use it when you’re taking your canine companion to an open space that is not crowded by either people or other dogs. One disadvantage is it limits your options to places such as beaches and fields.
Even then though, you have to be very aware of your surroundings because you don’t know what may be waiting up ahead.
If you want to err on the side of caution, it would probably be best to just not use the retractable leash and go with something else.
What Are the Alternatives to Using a Retractable Leash?
Instead of using a retractable leash, you can always go with the classic collar and leash combo. Your dog may not be able to run around as much if he/she is on a conventional leash, but you won’t have to worry about accidentally injuring them.
The American Kennel Club also points out that a harness can take the place of a collar because it offers better control, especially over larger dogs. A harness can also be more comfortable because it spreads the pressure over a larger area instead of localizing it around the neck like a collar would.
It’s also not a bad idea to consider using a specialized item such as a Harness Lead. A Harness Lead offers plenty of control over your dog while simultaneously being gentler on your pet’s body.
At first, retractable leashes may seem like an intriguing option to consider because of the freedom it can provide to your dog. On the other hand, you might as well go with an alternative options after considering the risks associated with using them.
