Odors: 5 Tips for Conquering

Dog odors is a problem for any house dog especially if your dog needs a bath or had an accident. The last thing you want is for your guest to walk in your home and make a funny face because of the dog odor. So what can you do?

We have a few tips to help you keep your home as odor free as possible:

Vacuum Often

Vacuuming daily or at least a few times a week will not only reduce the amount of dog hair and dirt that your dog tracks in from his walk, but it will also eliminate dander and odor. For quick and easy clean-ups, invest in a light weight handheld vacuum. One of the best handheld vacuums on the market made especially for pets is the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld vacuum. This vacuum is made especially for cleaning and removing pet hair and has a specialized rubber nozzle to attract and remove hair from furniture and stairs.

Bath Time

One of the worst dog odors is an unbathed dog. You should bathe your dog at least once every few weeks; however, a bath every week is recommended using a gentle dog safe shampoo. A shampoo with a nice smell is even better. Make sure to dry your dog really well, because you don’t want a wet dog smell which defeats the purpose of the bath.

Cleaning Up Accidents

Every house dog will have an accident from time to time such as peeing on floor or throwing-up when ill. Cleaning accidents off floors is much easier than carpet, but you want to sanitize the area well to avoid germs and odors. On floors, you can use several different household products to clean up the accident and sanitize the area. Carpet accidents are a little more difficult to clean because the stain can seep deeply into your carpet leaving a bad smell. Make sure you have a trusted carpet cleaner on hand for when accidents occur. You can also invest in a pet specific carpet cleaner. Stainmaster, Bissell and Resolve all make Pet Carpet Cleaners that not only clean your carpet but leave it with a fresh scent.

Clean Their Paws

House dogs have to go outside a few times a day for bathroom breaks. It is a necessity of their life! However, when they come back inside the house, they may track in dirt or lawn trash like leaves which can get caught in your carpet and cause stains and odors. Create a habit of cleaning his paws after every walk to eliminate the dirt as well as odors.

Air Fresheners

One way to quickly to eliminate odors is to have air fresheners on hand. With so many types of air fresheners available, we aren’t even going to recommend one over another. Find one or two that works for you and have them handy to eliminate dog odor quickly before the guests arrive.
