Cat Odors-How To Manage

Cat odors can be a problem and are bound to happen at some point. With a cat, it could be her litter box, throw-up or dander. No one wants to walk into their house and smell a horrible odor and we especially don’t want our guests to smell it. So what can we do?

We have a few tips to help you keep your home as odor free as possible:

Vacuum Often

Vacuuming daily or at least a few times a week will not only reduce the amount of cat hair in your carpet and on your floor, but it will also eliminate dander and odor. Consider investing in a light weight handheld vacuum for quick and easy cleanups. One of the best handheld vacuums on the market made especially for pets is the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld vacuum. This vacuum was made specifically for cleaning and removing pet hair and has a specialized rubber nozzle to attract and remove hair from furniture and stairs. It’s also good for cleaning around the litter box.

Cleaning Up Accidents

Every cat will occasionally have an accident such as throw-up or missing the litter box. Cleaning accidents off your floor is much easier than your carpet, but you sanitize the area to avoid germs and odors. On your floors, you can use several different cleaning products to clean up the accident and sanitize the area. Carpet accidents are a little more difficult to clean because the stain can soak into your carpet leaving a bad smell. Make sure you have a trusted carpet cleaner on hand for when accidents occur. You can also invest in a pet specific carpet cleaner. Stainmaster, Bissell and Resolve all make Pet Carpet Cleaners that not only clean your carpet but leave it with a fresh scent.

Clean the Litter Box

When having a house cat, the litter box can be the worst odor offender. To control cat odors, scoop your cat’s litter box on a daily basis to remove their waste. If you have more than one house cat, you will most likely need to scoop their litter box a few times a day. Also, buy litter than contains fresh scents like Fresh Step with Febreze or Tidy Cat with Glade. Also, thoroughly wash and clean your cat’s litter box a few times a month to keep the box smelling fresh.

Air Fresheners

One way to quickly eliminate odors is to have air fresheners on hand. We aren’t even going to recommend one because there are so many types to choose from. Find one or two that you like and have them handy to eliminate cat odor quickly before the guests arrive.
