Let’s face it! If you are a cat parent, you have to accept that your cat has lots of fur and that she will shed lots of hair daily (unless you own a hairless sphynx). The amount that a cat sheds depends on the cat bred, but you can expect to see lots of it on your furniture, floors, carpet, stairs and cloths every day. Even when you pet your cat, you can expect to end up with loose hair in your hands and in your lap. But how do you manage it? It’s everywhere!
We have a few tips to help you keep your home as cat hair free as possible:
Vacuum Often
Vacuuming daily will help reduce the amount of cat hair in your carpet and on your floor. Invest in a handheld vacuum if your upright’s missing a nozzle or too large to lug out every day.. One of the best handheld vacuums on the market made especially for pets is the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser Handheld vacuum. This vacuum is made especially for cleaning and removing pet fur and has a specialized rubber nozzle to attract and remove hair from furniture and stairs. It’s also good for cleaning around the litter box.
Groom Your Cat
Every cat parent knows that their cat is constantly grooming herself, but you can help her with her grooming by removing some of her hair before she coughs up a fur ball. Daily petting will help reduce some of the loose hair on your cat, but pet stores also sell special grooming items that will catch the loose hair and remove it from your cat. Pet stores sell several cat brushes that help remove the hair as well as petting gloves that capture the hair. You can also invest in a Furminator for Cats. This is a special cat grooming tool that is designed to remove the loose undercoat hair without damaging your cat’s topcoat or hurting her skin. Using the Furminator or other cat hair grooming tools will greatly reduce the amount of hair your cat leaves on the floor, carpet and furniture.
Feeding Your Cat
If your cat is eating a well-balanced diet and drinking water on a regular basis, her fur should be shiny and healthy. However, if she is not, she may experience excessive hair loss. Cat food with high protein and low carbohydrates can result in less shedding and keep your cat’s fur looking shinny and healthy. Talk with your vet to see what cat food he or she recommends to help your cat have a healthy coat and to help reduce the amount that she sheds.
Lint Brush or Roller
Now that you’re controlling the amount of cat hair you have on your carpet, floors and furniture, how can you control the amount of hair you have on your cloths? The #1 solution is a lint brush or roller. Brush or roll your cloths with a lint brush before you leave the house and that should take care of the fur on your cloths. You can also throw your cloths in the dryer for a few minutes with a dryer sheet if you don’t mind using the extra electricity. Lint rollers are great for furniture too. If you don’t have time to vacuum, use the lint roller on your furniture before your guests arrive to remove the loose cat hair so that your guests don’t leave covered in cat hair.
