Camping is a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors. It is also a great way to spend time with your family, including your four legged family members. That’s another reason why camping is so great, everyone can come along. Enjoy hiking, campfire stories and cuddles along with all of the wonders of nature.
But how do you know if the campground you choose is great for your pet? Not all campgrounds are the same and some are definitely more suited for pets than others. We decided to look into it to make it easier for you to choose a campground for your next trip.
The Top Things That Make Campgrounds Truly Pet Friendly
1. They have no breed or size discrimination
A good campground doesn’t have restrictions on breed or size. A lot of campgrounds start weight restrictions at 20lbs. However, if they are really a pet friendly camping sit, then they know that size doesn’t matter when it comes to manners. Pet friendly places also know that breeds are not a decisive way to know how a dog will behave either. That’s why a great campground won’t have these restrictions.
2. They have off leash areas and specific areas for dogs
Another hallmark of a good place for your pet is that they will have areas for your dog to walk and do their “business.” They may even have a dog park, but at the very least they should have stations with waste disposal bags and trash cans for your use. A good location will let you know where your dog can go and where they should not go. Places that are known for snakes or other hazards should be marked.
3. They give you info on local resources
When you check in with your dog, a good place will have tons of information for you. They’ll give you all the info you need on things like; dog friendly hiking trails, pet supply stores, the closest 24-hour animal hospital and more. They do this because they care about their canine campers just as much as their human ones!
4. They clearly let you know their rules and regulations
All campgrounds have their own rules when it comes to pets. Some allow you to leave pets unattended in your RV, and some do not. They sometimes have regulations on how or whether you can tether your dog at your site. Also, some have areas where pets are not allowed (like the pool), while others have no restrictions. Clear communication of the rules regarding pets on the campground website, and providing them again at check-in, make it easy for pet owners so you know exactly what is expected from you.
5. They provide pet friendly cabins
If you’re not really into tent or RV camping, it’s great to find a place with cabins that can be rented by people traveling without their own camper or RV. These camping cabins are pretty basic with wood floors and minimal furniture and would make a wonderful alternative to a hotel for pet travelers. But make sure to contact them first to make sure they rentals designated as pet friendly.
A weekend spent camping is never a bad weekend. So grab your tent, rent that cabin, hop in your RV with your dog and head for the woods. It’s the perfect way to relax with your loved ones.
